The Unknown - Mental Health Awareness Retreat

The Unknown

Do you believe in Aliens? I do.

I don't believe in the E.T looking kind nor the big monsters looking kind in the movie "Aliens" (and who knows? they may look just like that too), But I do believe there is life out there besides us. Life in another place, in another part of the planet/solar system that we may or may not know of.

Just take a look at how we recently just discovered sea creatures down deep in the sea. Prior to the technology and machines that we have today, we couldn't go down so deep in the sea and therefore we didn't know much of these creatures. Yet there they were, living. All these years, just living.

It reminds me of how people believed with all their hearts that the world was flat at some point in time. Eventually someone came out and said the world was round. Many people had issues believing that and it was not until it was proven as a fact, that the world was round, that people finally began to believe and accept that there was more to life than what they knew.

What was beyond their world? What was beyond the line where people thought that they would drown? The answer turns out to be...more life, more options and more diversity. So many people were scared of the unknown that they settled for what was in front of them even if that meant misery.

I think that is how some people are with mental health. Some people are so scared of the unknown and so comfortable with what they do know that they don't even dare to think to venture out. If all they have experienced is depression then that is all there is and will be. If all they have known is psychosis then there possibly can't be another way out. This is all they know, therefore this is all there has to be.

A few people have talked to me and told me "Josh I have xyz problem and I experience this and that and my life is so miserable, and horrible and I just can't think of living anymore" but when I ask what they have done to try to solve the issue at hand they say "well....this is my life and I don't see another way out. I don't want to try medications. I don't want to talk to someone about my problems. I don't want to try coping skills because I feel that is a waste of time. I don't want to see a dumb video that is going to tell me how to live my life. I don't want to read information, that is just a waste of my time. I don't want to research, I don't have time for that."

It stuns me!!! Even though I have heard this numerous times, it honestly shocks me each and every time. They complain and complain and complain but don't want to try anything! They don't want to venture out. How in the world do you expect better then? It's like wanting to drive to New York from Texas but you have two flat tires and don't want to change it because how DARE life treat you this way. How DARE life just blows off your plans. How DARE life hands you these cards. Why can't a car just magically appear for you? Yet, you have the option to call someone to replace the tires, or you might just have the two tires in your trunk and can replace them yourself. Or you can call a cab. The options are endless but some people refuse to see that.

You have options, you have ways of changing your life if you so wished. All you have to do is venture out into the unknown and find what works for you. Find what makes you feel better. Find what makes you happy! and healthy!. The only way there will be change though, is if you are willing to step out of your comfort zone. If you are willing to try new things. If you are willing to seek out your options.

Do you believe in something beyond what you see? Do you believe healing is possible? There is a whole world out there waiting for you, it's up to you to venture out.

  1. Lots of people are unsure of the unknown because it is perceived as big and scary, but I have found it to be both wonderful and intriguing. Part of that might be because I am a psych major and part of it might be because I am a writer, but I would rank discovering things about the world among my most favorite things. I might not always want to do it, but I have never regretted anything in my life because everything has either helped me learn something new or helped me to discover something new about myself. I took a brave step recently and admitted to the world that I probably have adult ADD, an illness which is often seen as just being lazy. I addressed those fears in a blog post I made about the matter and was greeted with nothing but positivity from my friends. Had I not taken a step into the darkness, I would have never found the light I did.

    1. I agree, it can be very scary to step into the unknown but many times stepping into the unknown is what brings greatness. I am so glad you received so much positive feedback.
