Behind The Laughter - Mental Health Awareness Retreat

Behind The Laughter

Just because someone laughs, jokes, plays around, dances, and appears to be having a great time...it doesn't mean they are not depressed or suffering from depression.

In fact many people with bipolar experience mania (an elevated energy level) before falling into depression while other people try to hide their depression very well. 'Smiling Depression' is a term used in referring to someone who you think is depressed, but doesn't appear it and/or won't admit they are.

Smiling and pretending to be ok only adds to the problem and makes matter worse. It means delay in treatment and a risk of suicide.

Talking about your true feelings doesn't make you a wimp or less of a person. It actually means you are strong for seeking out help. There is help and you are not alone.

For friends and family members as well as co-workers, don't be afraid to ask people how they are really doing. Truly listen to what the person is saying and offer resources. To render resources won't cost you anything but a few minutes of your time.
